Galaxy tear on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A jagged, torn-skin shape runs diagonally down the forearm, with the opening filled by a nebula of pink, violet and blue with soft white highlights. The edges of the tear are shaded to suggest depth, and the galaxy inside is rendered with soft blended gradients. The plain pale skin and blurred studio background keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Nell,

The last train went through Carrowmoor at twenty to eleven and I was still on the down platform when the sky tore. You won't believe me, so I've written it down on the back pages of the delay book, where Mr Pryce can't read it.

It started as a crack over the signal gantry, thin as a hair and jagged like the edge of a page ripped out in a temper. Then it ran, zig-zagging down toward the car park, and where it opened the dark wasn't dark at all. Pink clouds turned slowly inside it, violet bruising into blue, and little white sparks sat in the gaps as if someone had flicked sugar across the ink. I could feel warmth coming out of it, the way the kitchen door breathes out when you open the oven.

Ten minutes, maybe twenty. The station cat sat on the bench and watched it with me. Then a single thread of light came down and touched the rails, and the whole length of track began to hum, a low note like a finger round the rim of a glass. I put my hand up without thinking, the way you used to at the lake when we were small, and the tear closed behind it like a zip.

Nobody else saw. The 23:10 ran on time, the departure board still says Carrowmoor, and the cat has gone back to sleeping in the lost property box. But the air over the gantry is still faintly cold, and when I look up tonight I keep counting stars that weren't there last week. Come up at Easter. I'll show you the place.

Love, Ruth
