Arrow through two crescent moons on a lower leg

Neo-trad · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A black arrow runs diagonally through two crescent moon shapes, with small teal and pink dots along the shaft and arrowheads at both ends. The bold black outlines are filled with pink and teal shading that fades at the edges, with a few thin highlight curves inside the crescents. The tattoo sits centrally on a lower leg against a plain pale background.

The arrow had been shot from the bell tower of Saint Ebba's in the year the well went dry, and nobody in the valley would say who had loaned the bow. Brother Anselm kept it in the cloister wrapped in sacking, because the shaft still hummed when the wind came off the moor, and the lay sisters said it was best not to touch it after dark.

When the two moons came up over the ridge that autumn, one behind the other, the abbot sent for him. The pink moon was low and swollen, the teal one thin as a paring of apple, and the arrow seemed to want to go between them. Anselm had counted the beads along its shaft each night since midsummer, seven teal and five pink, and he knew one pink bead had gone missing in the rain. He said so. The abbot told him to go and find it.

He walked the moor road with a lantern and the arrow across his back. At the old ford a girl was washing sheets in the cold water, and she did not look up when he asked whether she had seen a small rosy bead. She said the bead was in the water where it belonged, and that the moons were only waiting for the arrow to be drawn back. Anselm set the lantern down on a stone and understood that he had been carrying the wrong end of the bargain all along.

He pulled the shaft from his shoulder, fitted it to the string, and let it fly at the thinner moon. It went through clean. When he went back to the abbey in the morning the bell was ringing for matins, and the well in the cloister was full to the lip.
