Galaxy unicorn in a triangle on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A rearing unicorn silhouette is filled with a night-sky pattern of deep purple, blue and red with scattered white stars. A black fine outline triangle sits over the figure, and a loose teal watercolour wash spreads behind the horse. The tattoo is shown on the outer thigh, with patterned shorts visible above it.

Sit nearer, and mind the paraffin, for the lamp wants trimming before the ships come past and I'll not tell this twice. My grandfather kept this light the winter the sea froze at the edges, and he swore on his mother's Bible that the horse came up out of the water at the turn of the tide. Nobody believed him at the Harbour Inn, but he never once touched a drop of gin after that.

It was no grey mare off a cart. It stood on the wet rocks below the gallery with its forelegs lifted and its horn pointing at the lamp as if it had come to ask a question. Its body was the colour of the sky at midnight, violet going to bruise-blue, and when the beam swept over it the light passed through like through a window, showing stars caught between its ribs and a red cloud where its belly should have been. Spray hung around its shoulders in a green-blue smoke that would not fall.
The horse wanted up the tower, though no horse had climbed a stair in its life. Grandfather took the grease pencil from the logbook and drew three lines on the glass of the lantern, a triangle round the flame, and the creature stopped at the edge of them as a dog stops at a gate. It stood there until the sky began to grey, looking at the light, not at him. Then the tide went out and took the spray with it, and the horse went too, back over the water on its hind legs.
In the morning there was only a smear of teal on the granite, cold to the touch, and on the sand a scatter of white flecks that dried to salt. He kept them in a jar on the windowsill. Pass me that jar, would you? Look close, and you'll see the stars have not all gone out.
