Galileo quote in script across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a handwritten-style script tattoo across the upper back, reading a quote attributed to Galileo over three lines with the name on a fourth line. The lettering is drawn in thin, even black linework with a little variation in stroke weight. The ink sits on pale skin against a dark top and a visible bra strap, and the image is framed tightly on the text.

Dear Tom, the lamp at Portland Bill has been dark since Tuesday, and Father says the glass has a crack running through it like a hair in milk. So I've been climbing the tower each night with a candle and the old brass telescope from the chapel loft, counting the Pleiades the way you taught me when I was small enough to sit on your knee. You'll laugh, but I'm not frightened of the dark any more. I used to stand in the doorway with the lamp shaking in my hand.

Father found a scrap of paper in the lamp-room cupboard, the back of an old tide table, with a sentence copied in brown ink in a hand none of us know: I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night. He read it out at supper and said it sounded like a man trying to talk himself out of a rope. Still, I copied it onto a card and pinned it above my bed, and that is the only reason I slept through the gale on Thursday when the north shutter tore loose.
Mr Crabbe came up on Friday with a bucket of pitch and a song far worse than the wind, and by evening the glass was whole. Tonight I light it properly for the first time since you sailed. When the beam swings out over the water I'll be thinking of your ship somewhere past the Casquets, under the same stars, and I'll keep the flame turned up until the sky goes pale.
If the sea stays kind, you'll see a light blinking off the headland every half minute. That's me, pretending I was never afraid of anything at all. Write soon, and tell the cook I want my share of the sugar back. Your loving sister, Ada
