Black and grey realism tattoo of a galloping horse with a flowing mane on the outer upper thigh.

Galloping horse on an upper thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black and grey tattoo of a horse in mid-stride, head turned to the left with its mane flowing back. The shading is soft and smooth, with strong dark tones along the mane, legs and back contrasted against lighter greys on the chest and face. The horse is set against a faint wash of grey suggesting dust or ground, and the photo is taken close up in warm, low light.

The cart is already rattling down the slipway when you notice Ruddock has left the gate open, and the grey mare is out of the shafts and away across the sands before anyone can shout. You run after her with a fish knife still in your hand, because the tide is turning and the crews need their catch carted up before the gulls get to it.

She does not so much run as pour herself along the shoreline, mane lifted behind her like smoke off a bonfire, head turned back over one shoulder as if to ask whether you are coming. The dry lane throws up a fine haze that hangs over the wet sand, and where the water has pooled in the ripples her hooves send up spray. By the time you reach the rocks your boots are full of harbour.

Old Tam Ruddock is leaning on the sea wall with his pipe unlit. 'She's making for Scarrow,' he says. 'Always did want the cliff road.' You have heard that about her every spring for eleven years. You have never once seen her go anywhere she was not sent, and yet there she is, nose pointed at the pale line of the headland, legs stretched long as if the ground were something to be outrun.

You do not follow. You sit on the wall beside Tam and watch the dust settle back over the sand, and when the last of the crew comes up the slip with crates on their shoulders, you tell them the cart can wait. Tam strikes his match at last. 'Good,' he says. 'Nobody ever caught her running for anybody else.'
