Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and I will not tell this twice over those lorries grinding up the hill. In my grandmother's time the customs men at Harrow Gap had a rule that anything carrying a horn paid double duty. They said it was for the bone, but everybody knew it was for the grey mare who came up the switchbacks every autumn, her mane pouring over one shoulder like river weed and her head always turned towards the far side of the pass.

Her owner was a salt carrier called Marta Oszkar, who had buried two husbands and had no patience for officers. One night the mare walked straight through the open shed door while Pieter Lenz was counting coins by candlelight. He shouted, she did not stop, and he followed her out into the snow with his sabre drawn. He found her standing at the gate, perfectly still, the horn lifted as though she were reading the sky.

He searched her, of course. Saddlebags, hooves, the hollow of her ears. He found nothing but a single cold line in the snow where the horn had rested, and when he touched it his fingers came away wet and silver. He wrote down that the animal carried no goods and no papers, and he let her go. Marta swore afterwards that Pieter never drew his sabre again.

Every morning after that, the frost on the gate was shaped like a spiral, and the wind came down from the far side carrying grey hairs that no one could ever quite gather.
