Galloping horse on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A dark horse runs at full stride with its mane flying and its head turned towards the viewer. Soft grey shading around the legs and hooves suggests a cloud of dust, while fine highlights along the body show muscle and light. The design is entirely black and grey and runs diagonally across the side of the torso.

The mare got out through the gap by the perry pears just after the wasps had given up for the afternoon. I heard the gate chain rattle before I saw her, and then Dad was shouting from the yard about the lane, the lane, and I was already running with a head collar in one hand that I had no intention of using.

Her name was Soot, though everyone called her Sooty when they were being polite. She was black as a wet boot except for the white blaze down her face, which made her look like she had been painted by someone in a hurry. By the time I reached the orchard road the dust was already standing up behind her in a long grey cloud, the windfalls crushed under her hooves and the cider apples scenting the air as if they were trying to keep up.

I stopped at the stile where the road bends past Harker's field, bent over with my ribs aching, and she stopped too. Not because of me. She turned her head towards the trees, mane flying wild across her neck, and stood with one forefoot lifted as if listening for something further off. The dust hung and drifted and slowly thinned over the stubble until the whole field looked like it had been breathing.

We walked her home together, slowly, the long way round through the rows. Dad didn't say anything about the gate. He just took the rope from my hand and let me carry the windfall apples in my shirt, and neither of us mentioned that she had gone out at a gallop and come back on a lead, like a horse that had decided the decision was hers.
