Horse head and poppies on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A horse head wearing a bridle faces left, framed within a dark outline and set against a brown and tan oval backdrop. Two red and white poppies and a yellow scroll motif sit to the sides and below, with the horse's mane and eye shaded in greys and black. The bold black outlines and saturated colour sit on a close crop of skin against a dark background.

The mare came down the scree road the week the poppies broke out along the wall, bridle still on her and reins trailing through the dust. Brother Anselm met her at the gate with a bucket of oats and found she would not eat. She stood with her head high and turned it again and again towards the valley road, which the abbey had not seen a rider use in forty years.

The abbot said she belonged to the widow at Cold Ash, who had sent her up with the tithe salt the spring before and never come back for her. Hild, the youngest novice, was sent down with the mare at dusk to find the widow. The poppies flared red along the verge, and the mare walked past every gate without slowing, her ears pricked towards the thin smoke rising from the far farmhouse.
At Cold Ash the door stood open and the hearth was cold. A neighbour said the old woman had walked into the poppy field in April and not come out. Hild led the mare to the field's edge. The mare lowered her head, took the bridle ring between her teeth and tugged once. The leather slid free over her ears, and she walked into the red without looking back.
Hild stood holding the bridle until the light went. When she got back to the abbey, Brother Anselm asked where the mare was. "She knew the way," Hild said, and hung the bridle on the peg beside the bell rope, where it stayed, the brass ring worn bright by a hand that was not hers.
