Gardenia flower on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single gardenia bloom with overlapping petals and two shaded leaves is tattooed on the forearm, with a thin stem trailing downward. The bold outlines are combined with stippled dotwork shading on the petals and leaves, giving soft grey tones. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits centred on a plain background of dark surfaces and a pale sleeve.

You are up before the lamp-lighters, cutting gardenia buds in the courtyard of the perfumer Wei behind the eastern market, your fingers already sticky with the milk-white flowers that open only in the dark. The petals bruise if you hold them too long, so you pinch each bloom by its thin green stem and drop it into the bowl of cool water at your hip. Yesterday's flowers have gone the colour of old tea. Master Wei says the buyers can smell rot long before they can see it.

A sprig of the bush you did not pick leans over the wall, dull with road dust. You think of your sister Lan, who married a salt merchant in Liangzhou and wrote that the desert wind there takes the scent out of everything. She asked for a sachet of the flower folded in silk, so she could carry home in her sleeves. You sewed one into the lining of a letter and sent it west with the caravan.
Three months later a letter comes back with its seal cracked, folded around a single petal, grey and papery, without a trace of perfume left in it. Lan wrote only that the wind had finally got to it, and asked you to keep the bush alive.
So you do. You water it at dusk and pinch away the spent blooms. When a new one opens in the dark, you cut the stem clean and set it in the bowl beside the lamp, where it can be smelled before anything else in the room.
