Swallow in flight line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a single swallow in side view, diving or banking to the lower left, with its wings swept back and its forked tail partly visible. The bird is drawn with clean, unshaded black outlines and a solid black head and throat, with feather detail suggested by a few tapered strokes. The design is isolated on a plain white background, with no colour and no body part visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows had been lining the telephone wire above Hollins Orchard since the middle of August, shuffling along it like beads on a string. My father counted them from the top of the ladder every morning, the way other men check the weather. On the Tuesday before Kate left for Bristol he got to forty-one, gave up, and shook his head at the wire as if it had cheated him.

I was on windfalls, filling crates with bruised Discovery apples that the wasps had already found. The grass under the trees was sweet and rotten, and every few minutes a single swallow came low across the rows, skimming the wet ground where the fruit lay, then banking so close I felt the air move past my ear. Kate watched me from the tailgate of her car with a box of books on her knee.

'They don't go because they want to,' she said. 'The cold just tells them.' I said I didn't believe her, that a bird with a map in its head would surely stay for the last of the pears. She laughed and tossed me the car keys to hold while she lifted the box. 'Leave the barn doors open. That's where they'll come back to.'

On Thursday the wire was bare. I stood at the gate with a crate on my hip and watched the road where her car had gone, and then a swallow dropped out of the blue and dipped over the trough beside me, drinking without slowing, its forked tail flicking once as it turned toward the open barn. I left the doors wide and went back for the last of the apples.
