Gears, roses and keyhole heart across the chest
Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo
A wide chest piece shows a golden heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole at its centre, flanked by interlocking cogs and two red roses. Chains, beaded drops and ornate filigree scrollwork run along the width of the design. Bold dark outlines and soft shading give the elements dimension, and the piece is centred horizontally across the upper chest with the person's face and head cropped out of frame.

You have the key to a padlock that no longer exists. Nobody at Carrow Junction remembers the locksmith's shop beside platform four, only the brass heart he hung above its door and the gears that turned the sign whenever a train came in. Your mother used to say the heart was the station's clock, and that when it stopped the last train would leave without anyone on it. You believed her until you were nine and the platform clock stopped anyway, and nothing happened except that the tea stall closed early.

Now you work the night signal box, logging wheel counts and cursing the damp. On Thursdays a woman in a green coat sits on bench three with a cardboard box on her knees, and each week she asks you the same thing: whether the 22:40 to Rennick still runs through the old cutting. It doesn't. The line was lifted in the spring. You tell her so, and each week she nods as though you have confirmed a secret she already keeps.
On the third Thursday of November she leaves the box behind. Inside, under tissue paper, you find a heart-shaped lock gone green at the hinge, its keyhole packed with grit, and two red roses pressed flat between cogs of rusted tin. A slip of card reads: for whoever finally tells me the truth about the line. Your hands know what to do before your head does. You fit the key you have carried since childhood, the one from the shop, and it turns.
The signal lamps along the cutting flicker to green, one by one, down the length of track that was lifted in spring. Far off, a whistle answers. You step out of the box with your coat open and walk towards the sound, because the heart has opened and the clock on platform four is ticking again.
