Birds on a vine across the collarbone

Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A thin black vine with curled tendrils sweeps from the shoulder across the collarbone, where three black silhouetted birds sit on a branch. Small pink blossoms are scattered along the stem, and the delicate linework contrasts with the solid black bird shapes. The tattoo is shown on pale skin against a dark background, with the subject's chin and dark hair at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The big top had not gone up since the spring the lion was sold, but three blackbirds still came down every dusk to sit on the guy rope above the empty field at Culm. Old Tobias Wren said they were the last customers the show had left, and he saved the heel of his loaf for them. The rest of the company had drifted off to factories and farms. Only Tobias and his granddaughter Nell kept the wagon wheels greased.

The people of Culm used to say the birds were the show's luck. When the ringmaster was thrown from his horse, they lifted off the canvas all together, and he lived. When the wire snapped over the river, they sat on the broken end and would not be shooed, so the crowd stayed to watch and paid at the gate. Nobody paid now. Nell walked the rope over the empty field each evening anyway, because her grandfather could not bear to see the wire go slack.

One evening in late autumn the wagon would not start. Tobias sat on the step with his cap in his hands and did not speak. Nell did not argue with him. She climbed the guy rope herself, which she had never been allowed to do, and sat beside the blackbirds. They shuffled along to make room. Below her the grass was grey with frost, and nothing moved except the birds' breath and the slow turn of the dull spokes.

In spring a thin green shoot came up the rope where the tar had worn it bare, then a tendril, then blossom the colour of cheap ribbon. By May the vine had climbed to the wagon door and the petals pricked through the paint on HARROW AND DAUGHTER. Tobias wiped the sign with his sleeve and left the petals where they were. The three birds sat on the new branch and watched the field, as if the crowd might still come.
