Geisha with finger to lips on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A portrait of a woman in traditional geisha styling, with a dark updo decorated by white flower blossoms and hanging ornaments, and one finger raised to her painted lips in a hush gesture. The face and hair are shaded with smooth gradients and fine detail, with bold black outlines defining the flowers and the top of the ornaments. The tattoo is entirely black and grey and fills the frame on a leg against a plain wooden background.

The lamp at the end of Corrie Pier had been dead since the spring gale, so Mags Duthie found the boat by feel and by the smell of diesel. Her brother Alec was already aboard, coiling a rope that did not need coiling. Neither of them said the thing they had both come to say. Instead she held up one finger, the way their mother used to when the wireless was playing in the kitchen and somebody was about to mention the price of herring.

They sat in the wheelhouse with the engine ticking and the tide sucking at the hull. Alec had brought a tin of shortbread wrapped in a page of the Courier, and the paper was printed with an advert for a hairdresser in Wick, a woman with a pinned crown of white blossoms, smiling as if she knew something about the weather. Mags tore it off and folded it small. The sea outside was the colour of wet slate, and somewhere past the breakwater a bell buoy swung and complained.

Alec opened his mouth, and Mags pressed her finger harder to her lips. She had seen the harbourmaster's ledger that morning, and the cheque from the cannery was not for what he had told the crew. Whatever he meant to say about it, the water had already heard. They waited until the bell had rung three times and the first light came grey over the Ord. Then she unhooked the mooring line herself, and the boat slid out without a word.
