Pin-up woman and roses on a hand
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A woman with a beauty mark and rolled, curled hair is tattooed across the back of a hand, with a red choker and red hoop earring. Shading is smooth and grey-brown, with defined black outlines around the face, hair and features. Two red roses with green leaves sit in her hair and a third rose with black outlining runs across the side of the hand, against a deep red backdrop.

The calendar girl had to be finished by Friday, and Ivy still could not settle whether her roses should be red or pink. Mr Hale at the Gaiety wanted red, the colour of the curtains, so the men on the front would look twice. Ivy mixed the vermilion on a saucer and said red was for people with no imagination, and Mr Hale said that was exactly why it sold.

She worked under the bare bulb after the tea urn had gone cold. The hair came first, rolled and pinned in long dark waves, each curl a single stroke she could not afford to waste. The beauty mark went on last, a dot the size of a lentil, because she had learned that a man remembers a mole long after he has forgotten the face. Her brother Dennis was due on the Tuesday boat with his hand bandaged from the winch, and she had promised him something to keep him from asking about the rent.
The something was not the calendar. On the Thursday she sat him at the kitchen table and pricked the same girl into the back of his good hand with the borrowed machine from the man at the harbour, shrunk to the width of a thumb. Her red choker ran in a thin ribbon across his knuckles and a hoop earring hung at the wrist. Dennis complained that it stung, then complained that it itched, then went quiet and watched his own fingers.
When the ink was wiped clean he made a fist and opened it again, and the girl's head seemed to turn with the knuckles. "Now you've got someone who won't ask where you've been," Ivy said. Dennis said she was the only one who never would, and walked down to the pier to show Mr Hale, who paid him in cigarettes and a free look at the calendar.
