Woman's face portrait on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A woman's face in three-quarter view fills the frame, with swept back hair, a beauty mark on her cheek and dark lips. The face is shaded in soft greys with bold black outlines and fine stippled texture. Yellow-ochre scrollwork and black flourishes sit beside and below the face, framing the composition against the skin.

Halloran painted the girl on the hoarding at Culver Junction the summer the line was electrified, and he gave her the look of a woman who had already missed her train. He mixed her greys from lamp soot and linseed and stippled the cheeks with the tip of a goose quill. When the stationmaster asked why she wasn't smiling, Halloran said smiles sold tea but a shut mouth sold tickets.

Every morning the 6.12 went past her with its windows full of commuters who glanced up, sighed, and went back to their papers. Halloran began to think she was waiting for someone. He painted a yellow scroll under her chin so the first sun would catch it, and a black flourish that curled off her hair towards the signal box, where Ada Pryce pulled the levers and hummed hymns under her breath.
One wet November the company pasted a notice over the girl's left eye and sent word that the hoarding would come down in the spring. Halloran climbed the ladder with a pot of ochre and a brush he had not used in years. He did not paint over the notice. He painted a small brass key into the scroll, then a row of numbers, and when Ada asked what they meant he told her they were the times the signalman had never once been late.
The next morning the 6.12 slowed at the junction, though no one had signalled it to. Ada leaned from her window and saw the girl's painted eyes turned down the line, as if she had finally spotted something coming, and the train waited, humming, while the whole platform looked up.
