Geisha with katana and cherry blossoms
Japanese · Mixed · Flash
A woman with a geisha-style hairstyle and pink hair ornament holds a katana across her body, with a bare shoulder and dark robe. Pink cherry blossoms, petals and small red-and-black butterflies frame the figure against a soft grey background. The figure is rendered with smooth blended shading and detailed highlights, with colour concentrated in the flowers and grey tones in the rest of the image.

The blade had to be oiled before the blossom came down, Obaa-chan always said, or the steel would drink the spring and go soft in the hand. So Aiko knelt on the workshop boards at first light, cloth folded over two fingers, drawing the oil along the ridge while petals drifted through the open shutter and settled on the floor like pink ash. Her uncle sold blades to the magistrate's men and to anyone else with coin, but he had given her this one to keep sharp, and she guarded it the way she guarded the charcoal.

The ronin came in the week the plum trees gave up. His coat was grey with road dust and he did not sit down. He asked whether the katana could cut a man's sleeve away without marking the arm beneath, and Aiko said the steel only does what the hand asks, which was not the answer he wanted. He left the price on the mat and walked out into the lane. She hung the blade on the rack above the hearth, where the smoke kept the damp off, and told herself it was none of her business where he went.
Through the cold months the old cherry by the well sent its petals to the shutter each morning, and each morning she found one caught on the lacquer of the scabbard, then a dozen, until the black varnish wore pink along the seam. When the ronin returned in spring he did not ask for the blade. He stood in the doorway with his hat in his hands and watched the petals lift off the sill in the draught. She wrapped the katana in oiled paper and held it out. He turned it once, read the pink on the saya like a letter, and tucked a single petal into his sleeve before walking off down the lane without a word.
