The parasol is still leaning against the umbrella stand when you come down for the early train, its black paper gone soft with a week of sea air. Mrs Ferrier is already at the hall table with her ledger, and she doesn't look up when you ask. The lady in the back room left before light, she says. Paid in coins, all of it, counted into a saucer. She didn't want the room cleaned.

You think of her at the window every evening, chin tipped down as though the harbour had dropped something she meant to fetch. She painted her mouth before supper with a brush from a tin, and once you saw the corners of her eyes streaked red, as if she had been crying in a language only the sea would understand. The gulls worked the rocks below. Dark ink ran off the end of the pier in the afternoons, spilling where the water met the stone, and she watched that longer than anything else.

You stand on the step with the thing open over your shoulder, and the sun comes through its ribs in long stripes across the wet cobbles, and the first train whistles up the valley without you.
