Winged blindfolded justice figure across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large back piece shows a winged female figure with her eyes covered by a blindfold, holding a pair of scales at her side. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong contrast in the dark feathers, flowing cloth and hair. The composition fills the whole back, with the wings spreading out over the shoulders and the scales hanging on the right.

The hall at Greyhollow had no roof left to speak of, so the rain came down on the players as well as the audience, and nobody minded. I held the brass scales steady on the trestle while Nell Marrow buckled the blindfold over her eyes and rolled her shoulders until the wings of black rook feathers settled along her back.

She had been paid in ale and a heel of bread to walk the hall as Justice, and she never once looked down. Her feet found the broken flagstones by memory. When the lord's steward came in with his accusation, a bundle of stolen silver wrapped in sacking, she turned her blind face toward him and lifted the scales as if they weighed nothing at all.
Nobody in the hall could say which pan dipped first. I swear the left one fell, heavy with silver, but the steward swore it was the right, heavy with his own hand pressing down. Nell stood very still while the torches guttered. Then she untied the cloth and let it drop at her feet, and her eyes were wet and furious and perfectly clear.
"Weigh it again," she said to me, and I did, and the silver came out even. The steward left before the second act. Some nights I still think about that blindfold. She had never needed to see the scales to know which way they must tip.
