The Ferris wheel at Hollins Green has been stuck at the top for twenty minutes, and from up there you can see the whole fair, which is exactly why you chose this stall. Castor is counting the float again, licking his thumb between notes the way he does when he is nervous, though he would deny it under oath. In thirty-four years you have never once seen him nervous. You have seen him do other things.

The apples came from a glut crate outside Ledbury, Cox's going soft at the shoulders, and the toffee set in the copper pan while the generator coughed. Mrs Pargeter from the coconut shy saw the tray go out at six and saw it come back with three sticks missing, which told her most of what she needed about the evening. On the chopping board, the spare fruit lay halved and wet, the seeds laid out like a small star. Castor had cut the other half of the crate. The two piles looked nothing alike, and you both knew what they were for.

Pargeter came over at ten past nine with a paper cup of tea she never drank. She asked after the Ledbury man's cousin, whether the dodgem lights were paid up, and whether a brother could carry a secret the way a crate carries apples: wrapped in straw, and only so long before one of them rots. You told her nothing. Castor told her everything, cheerfully, while you wiped down the cleaver.

By midnight the wheel had started turning again, and the painted sunburst above the big top went round and round in the dark. Castor went to bed with the cash box under his pillow and the whole fair asleep around him. You kept the cleaver. Somewhere down the hill a toffee apple rolled off the tray and kept rolling, bright as a warning, all the way to the river, where the bad ones always end up.
