Rain had been coming off the canvas awnings all morning, and the twine stall at the far end of Hebden Bridge market had gone soft at the corners. Nasreen Hale worked a hank of waxed cotton loose from the pile and found the length she had been looking for since Tuesday: a thin black cord, longer than it had any right to be, with a brass disc knotted at one end where her grandfather used to hang a handbell.

She had sold cord for thirty-one years to people who wanted it for kites, bread bags, boat lines and once a funeral wreath. Nobody ever asked for the black one. Her father had tied its loops by hand in the back room above the chippy, pressing a dot of ink into each bight so a person could find the way back through when the rope was rough in the hand. He used to say a good knot held a thought as well as a load, and that the dots were there to remember the thought.
A lad in a wet anorak ducked under the awning and asked whether she could make a plumb line for his uncle's dry stone walling, something that would not stretch in the damp. She told him the black cord was not for sale. He stood dripping while she ran her thumb along the stroke from the disc down to the first loop, then to the interlaced knots, then to the three small dots left at the tail where the cord had been cut clean.
She handed him a plain white length instead and showed him the double hitch. When he had it, she took the black cord, tied the three dots into a final half hitch, and hung it on the hook by the till. The rain kept on, and the lad went off with his uncle's line counting knots on his fingers.
