Gemstone and scrollwork on a finger
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a small tattoo on the top of a finger, showing black ornamental scrollwork on either side of a central oval gem filled in deep red and purple. A column of dots descends from the gem to the base of the finger. The shading is soft against the skin, and the design is centred and framed tightly on the finger.

Dear Nell,

You'll not believe what came over the counter on Thursday. A woman in a grey coat set a ring down on the velvet as if it were a bus ticket. Scrollwork either side of a garnet the size of a sloe, and a little trail of dots running down from it, like someone had tried to count the drops of wine spilled at a wake. Mr Harrowby held it to the lamp and said it was paste. Then he turned it over, saw the hallmark inside the band, and went quiet the way he does when a sum won't add up.
She wouldn't take the first offer. She wouldn't take the second. She sat with her hands folded and said the stone had been her grandmother's and that it carried a debt, and she only wanted to know who had been paid last. Harrowby, who has never once asked a customer a question he didn't have to, asked her what she meant. She said the dots were years, one for each person who had held it before her, and the last of them had not finished paying.
I wrote the ticket myself, so I know what it says: one ring, garnet, pledged for four shillings, redeemable within the year. Harrowby keeps the stub in his waistcoat now. Last night I found him at the till with the lamp turned low, tracing the dots with his fingernail and counting under his breath. He got to twelve and stopped, and he didn't say what he'd lost count of.
Write soon. Tell me the price of coal has come down.
Your loving brother, Tom
