Fine line chain bracelet tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand and wrist with a fine line tattoo that imitates a chain bracelet, made of dotted links that loop across the wrist and drop into three small pendants, a diamond, a teardrop and a crescent. The linework is thin and mostly solid black with some stippled dots, and the design is in black ink only. The hand is shown against a dark background with the fingers angled downwards, and the tattoo sits at the centre of the frame.

The jeweller's daughter had been stringing beads since the morning the river froze, and by the time the boats came back up the Tigris she had learned that a chain is only a promise of many small things holding hands. Her father sold silver to men who wanted their wives to look like moons. She sold nothing. She sat by the window of the back room with a bowl of dotted links at her elbow and a needle in her teeth, and she made the same three charms over and over until her fingers knew them better than her name.

When the caravan master's son came to ask for a bracelet for his mother, she gave him a length of fine chain that loosened when the wrist turned, so that the pendants swung just so over the bone. He asked what the diamond meant. She told him it was for the road, because a diamond is the shape a road makes when you look down on it from a height. He asked about the teardrop and she said it was for the rain that falls on people who are far from home, and he laughed at her and paid her twice the price.
The crescent she kept for herself. Nobody ever asked about it, which suited her. It hung at the very end of the chain, the last thing a hand would brush, and she liked to think of it as the moon waiting politely for the others to finish their conversation.
The caravan master's son came back in autumn with his mother's bracelet still on her wrist, or so he said, and asked her to make another. She finished the links that night by lamplight. In the morning the window was white with frost, and the three small pendants lay in the bowl, one of them already warm from her hand.
