Fine line geometric dragonfly tattoo in black ink on the inner upper arm of a person wearing a white top.

Geometric dragonfly on the inner upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A dragonfly drawn in faceted, geometric linework with angular wings and a segmented body that tapers to a small arrowhead-like tail. The thin black lines are crisp and even, with the wings built from triangular and kite-shaped panels and no shading or fill. The tattoo is centred on the inner upper arm against a plain, slightly out-of-focus background, with a white top visible at the edge of the frame.

Mira, the chart room smells of wet paper again, and I have spent three nights trying to draw the Sound the way it actually sits, not the way the admiralty drew it in 1791. Their coast runs in clean straight lines, all bays squared off like a box of folded paper. I have made it true at last, every reef a kite of ink and every headland a sharp angle where the wind bends round it. Captain Ostrander says it looks like a map of glass. He means it kindly, I think.

The real marker is the thing I cannot get right. On the old chart there was a little arrow pointing north over the shoals, and nobody on board would say who made it. Yesterday the boy from the galley came up with a scrap of tin he had hammered flat and punched with a nail, a dragonfly with its wings cut into facets, and asked if it could go in the corner. I said yes before I thought. Now the pointed tail of it lies right over the deepest channel, and every time I look at it I want to tell him to file it down, though I know he would only ask why.

We make the Sound on the morning tide if the glass holds. I will fold this into the tube with the charts so it does not get wet. If the sheet comes back to you with a dark mark over the channel, do not worry. That is only the wing where I pressed too hard, and it is still the best line I have ever drawn.
