Geometric arrow tattoo down the spine
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's bare back shows a vertical black tattoo of a stacked arrow motif with a diamond lattice in the middle, placed along the spine between the shoulder blades. The linework is clean and symmetrical, with solid black fills at the arrow tips and fine crossing lines forming the lattice. Silver chains drape over the shoulders and back, and a grey bralette is visible, against warm, sunlit skin.

Ada had been winding the same length of linen thread since before the frost broke, and her uncle still said the cross-hatching was too tight. "Arrows don't need to look like lace," he said, turning a shaft under the lamp in the barn. But she had seen the old bow in the loft, its string wrapped in a diamond pattern that had held through three generations of rain, and she meant her arrows to hold just as well.

The farm sat above the reservoir at Hollin Edge, where the snow came sideways off the fells and the ewes stood with their backs to it. Every evening she dipped the heads in pitch, let them dry along the rafters, then bound the lattice again, pulling each crossing until it lay flat. Her uncle said the stacked fletching came from a hawk his grandfather once shot on the ridge, though nobody in the family agreed on which hawk. She liked that nobody agreed. It left room for her to decide.
On the last morning before the hunt the thaw came early and the yard turned to slurry. Her uncle lifted the finished set, weighed each one in his palm and set aside only one. "This one's yours to loose," he said. She asked why, and he shrugged. "It's the only one that didn't sit true when you bound it."
She drew it back at the gate, the black head catching the grey light, and understood that the wobble in the wrapping was the most honest thing she had made. The arrow flew wide and low over the wall, and she ran after it through the wet grass, laughing.
