A woman with long blonde hair, seen from behind, shows a dark ink hamsa hand tattoo centred on her upper back. Small gold metallic temporary tattoos appear on her shoulder and arm, and the background is a plain pale wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mule had gone lame a day short of the well at Haddar, and Yusra sat on the salt sacks with her shoes in her lap, watching the road shimmer where it met the sky. Her father had told her that a traveller who stops in the open must draw the protection of the hand before anything else, so she pressed her palm flat on the warm sand and traced the five fingers with her thumb, the way her grandmother had taught her, until the shape felt like a door she could close.

Something moved on the ridge. A rider came down slowly, a man in a grey headcloth with a rifle across his back, and he raised one hand as he came near. Yusra did not lift hers. She had seen men on this road who smiled with their mouths and counted coins with their eyes, so she kept her hand low with the fingers spread, the old sign against the eye that looks too long at what it wants.

He stopped at a distance and looked at the mule, then at her, then at the hand scratched in the dust. "Your father taught you that?" he asked. "My grandmother did," she said. He nodded, unhooked a waterskin from his saddle, set it on the sand between them, and rode on without looking back. The water was still cool when she drank.

When her father came at dusk with a new axle and a cousin to help lift the sacks, she told the story as if it were nothing. Only later, pouring tea, did she notice the stranger had left the skin filled to the neck, which no thief would do. She hung it on the nail by the door, beneath the painted hand that had kept the house since before her grandmother was born.
