Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical geometric motif made of stacked diamonds, angled strokes and a pointed tip sits centrally on the upper back. The linework is crisp and black, with solid lines and no visible shading. The skin is warm-toned against a patterned woven blanket draped over one shoulder, and the person's face is not shown.

Caravan men came up the Kessar road in autumn with mules that smelled of salt and fear. They read the marks the way other people read weather. Stacked diamonds meant the spring held water. The night before the first snow, Ilse climbed above the pass with a lamp and a stub of charcoal and followed the point with her eye. It ran down the north slope, past the scree, to a hollow where her brother had gone out with the salt train two winters back and never come down. The caravans had never looked there, because the stone had always told them not to.
In the morning she cut a second point, small and blunt, on the reverse face, and left the chisel out in the cold so the edge would hold.
