Geometric arrow tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A person with long, loose hair and a white vest top is photographed from behind in a crowded outdoor setting. On the upper arm is a black tattoo of angular arrows and triangular shapes, drawn with clean, solid linework. The image is monochrome, so the ink's colour cannot be judged beyond its dark tone, and the tattoo sits off-centre near the shoulder.

Dear Nell, the last of the bridge drawings came back from the printers this morning with the arrows smudged along the lower edge, and I have been told to take the whole set to the council office by Friday or lose the commission. I sat up with the lamp until two, tracing the bearing arrows you taught me to draw, the ones that point true north for men who cannot read a compass to save their lives.

The triangles are benchmarks, the solid little ones you used to keep on the survey sheets. Mr Pattle wants them bolder so the foremen at the far end of the cut can find them in fog. I warned him the ink would bleed in the damp, so he unlocked the drawer where he keeps the good Indian ink and handed me a steel rule without a word. The star he insisted on himself. It sits in the top corner where the meridian crosses the old lock gate, and he says every chart needs one mark that nobody is allowed to argue with.
Yesterday the final barge went through the new lock with no one on the towpath to see it off. The lock keeper's boy stood on the beam and counted the gates out loud, the way his father used to, and then he asked me whether the drawings would still be right once the water had settled. I told him they would, because I had checked every line twice and the arrows always point where the water is going to be.
I have left the star unfinished, just the one point of it, the ink dried thin. Come home when the season ends and finish it yourself. You always had the steadier hand, and I would rather you were the one who made it true. Your loving sister, Ada.
