Fine script lettering across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person seen from behind, with their hair pulled up and one arm raised, shows thin script lettering across the upper back near the neck. A small dark mark is also visible on the upper arm. The photograph is in black and white with a soft, blurred city street behind, which keeps the focus on the skin and ink.

Maren had waited three days in the rain for her turn. When the lamp came close she turned her head slowly so the woman could read the line her father had pricked in the night before, with a needle heated over the stove and a pinch of soot from the chimney. It was a line from the miller's song, the one about the river that goes under the mill and comes up somewhere else.
The woman read it under her breath. Then she frowned and read it again, and the lamp moved away and back. "This is not the miller's song," she said. "The miller's song says stay here. Yours says go on." Maren had not known her father had changed it. He had sat up with her all night, his hands shaking, and had said nothing about the change.
The woman stamped the paper and handed it back without looking up. "Go on, then," she said. Maren went out into the dark towards the far bank, carrying the words where she could not see them, and behind her the lamp stayed lit for the next person in the queue.
