Ornamental wrist tattoo with lotus motif
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink ornamental design sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist, framed by a diamond-shaped panel with scalloped edges. A stylised plant or lotus-like motif rises from the centre, with solid circles, dotted lines and curled leaves filling the bands above and below. The linework is crisp and even, the design is entirely black and grey, and it is shown straight on against a pale skin tone and a blurred salon background.

Dear Tamsin, the snow closed the Kessar pass on the fourth day of the month, so the carters are sleeping in the upper byre and I am writing this by the stove with the lamp turned low to save the oil. Your block came up with the last mule before the gate shut. Father had wrapped it in oilcloth and tied it with the red thread you always hated, and when I unwrapped it the lotus was still sharp, every scallop of the diamond clean as the day you cut it.

I have been printing with it each evening since. The dye is indigo from the valley vats, thick enough to stand a spoon in, and I press the block onto the good linen the way you taught me, counting three before I lift it. The two round suns, the one at the peak and the one below the band, came out grey on the first sheet because I had not wiped the ink out of their hollows. You would have laughed at me. I laughed at myself alone in the kitchen like a fool, and Mother called through the wall to ask what had got into me.
The carters want cloth to take down to the lowlands before the thaw, and they keep asking why the pattern has no name. I told them it is a window, and they looked at me as if I had lost my wits. Perhaps I have. But the lotus is the only thing on the block that opens upwards, and when I print it the sheet comes away with the plant reaching for the light, even under this roof.
I am sending the best sheet with the mule when the road opens. Look in the lower corner. There is a thumbprint in indigo where I held the linen too close to the vat. It is my mark, not yours, so you will know the cloth was printed by the one who stayed. Write when the carters are back, and tell me whether the suns are supposed to be that heavy.
