Hush now, and pass me the lamp, for the wick is sulking and so am I. You want the one about Brother Aldous and the diamond. The valley knows the bones of it, but nobody hears the whole, and the whole is in the lines.

Aldous was set to cut the east window of St Ebba's, and the abbot wanted a light that would fall in a pointed shape across the floor. Aldous drew it first in the dust of the cellar, a long diamond, then folded it inward, ring within ring, until the lines crowded like barley in a wet field. He put a small circle at the heart of each half, two of them, like eyes that had agreed not to blink. Brother Hob, who ground the pigments and could not draw a straight line to save his soul, said it looked like a fish trap. Aldous said a trap is only a shape that waits.
The window was finished at midwinter. On the first clear morning after, the light came over the scarp and struck the glass, and the diamond laid itself down on the flagstones. But the abbot had also asked for a sunburst low on the sill, where the day first touches. Aldous pricked it out in dots, thousands of them, with a bronze awl until the grey stone looked like frost, and beneath it he ruled a dozen straight lines for the horizon, so the sun would have something to sit on.
Hob came to watch the sun settle on its line like a bird on a fence, and he understood that Aldous had not built the window for God so much as for the moment a man stops and looks. Then the old monk went down to the cellar, sat in the dust and drew a smaller diamond for whoever would need one next. Mind the fire, now. These candles are for the lazy.
