Geometric diamond and circles on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a geometric tattoo on the upper arm, showing nested triangles, a diamond and two circles, one solid dotted and one dotted outline, with three dots below. The linework is thin and precise, with dotwork shading in the lower triangles. The ink is black and the composition is centred on the arm against a dark background, with a black lace top visible at the edge of the frame.

Dear Hettie, the theodolite froze again this morning, so I have spent two hours with my thumb on the brass screw and nothing to show for it but a blister and a sky that cannot decide on rain. The Harrow Gap sighting is finished, though. Four cairns, each one sighted from the one below, and at the top a post with a black iron disc riveted to its crown, which the shepherds insist is a sun.

Mr Quill wants the whole pass drawn as one figure before the Ordnance men come up in spring. I have it on paper now: three lines rising to a point, a diamond of sightlines crossing beneath, and two rings. The solid ring is the bell post where we hang the lantern in fog. The dotted ring is the hollow where the chain rests, a circle of frost that never melts before June. Below them I have set three dots for the three hours the light stays on the north face, the only time a man can read the stakes properly.

Tobiah, the shepherd's boy, counted the dots with me yesterday and asked why the diamond had no door. I told him the diamond was the door, that every line on it opens onto somewhere else. He did not believe me, so he walked the far sightline himself with a lamp and came back an hour later with snow in his hair and the news that the lines meet exactly on the hollow, where a ewe had dug herself a bed out of the wind.

I shall send you the drawing tomorrow, if the disc holds its shine. Keep the kettle on. The chart is nearly done, and I have started to dream in triangles. Yours, Walter.
