Geometric fox with dotwork halo on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A geometric fox sits upright in the foreground, drawn with fine black linework built from angular facets. Behind it, a faint grey diamond outline and a fan of black dots and dotted rays radiate from a central dot. The shading is minimal, relying on line and stippled dots, and the design is shown in black ink on skin against a wooden surface.

The fox came down the stairwell of Harrow Point the night the lift finally died, picking its way between the bikes and the pram nobody had claimed since March. Mrs Adeyemi on the fourth floor swore it was the same fox that had been lying in the car park all summer, but I'd only ever seen it as a shape of light lines on the concrete, the way you see a thing when you've stopped expecting it.

That was the winter Dev from the council came round with his clipboard and his laser measure, and he kept telling us the block was a set of straight lines and sensible angles. He pointed at the diamond shape the architects had scratched into the cladding, a grey frame around every window, and said it was all just geometry. Nobody argued. Nobody had the heart. But Mrs Adeyemi laid out a dozen dark dots on her windowsill one evening, one for each flat that had gone quiet, and joined them to a point in the middle with thread, and the thread made the fan you could see from the street.
The fox sat on the bottom step at the end, angled and sharp as folded paper, and waited for someone to notice it was the only thing in the building still plotting its own way through.
We followed it out on the last night before the demolition crew came. It led us across the car park, past the bins, to a gap in the fence where the diamond frame of the old garages still stood, half-lit by the streetlamp. The fox stopped at the centre of the frame and looked back at us, and then it was simply gone, leaving the dots of our breath hanging in the cold air above the empty ground.
