Geometric cactus and winged sun on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical geometric design built from a feather-topped arrow, a winged sun with a central face, and a cactus enclosed in a dotted circle, joined by a dotted line ending in a downward arrowhead. The linework is fine and the detail is built from stippled dots and thin strokes, with some areas of light shading. The design is in black ink only and is centred on a pale forearm against a dark plaid sleeve.

The third week out from Caddow Wells, the chain snapped on the theodolite, and Mabel Ruddock carried the brass case the last mile under her arm like a sick child. Nobody had warned her the flats would hold so much silence. At noon the sun sat low over the haze with its wings folded out, its face scratched into the air so that she could not tell whether it was watching her or only tired.

Her instructions were plain. Survey the dry lake to the east, fix true north from the Hollow Stone, and mark the place where a single cactus stood inside a circle of nothing. The surveyor before her, Ansel Pike, had sent back forty pages of figures and one line in the margin: the arrow points where the water goes when it thinks nobody is looking. She had laughed at that in the office. She did not laugh now.
On the ninth day she found the cactus. It stood alone, ringed by a dotted line of stones laid so precisely that her compass needle shivered whenever she crossed them. She took the sighting and wrote the figure, and because the notebook asked for a name, she wrote Here. Beneath her boots the ground gave a low sound, like a bell struck under a blanket, and a thin dark seam of water ran out from the root toward a row of stones shaped like an arrowhead.
She followed it south with the theodolite on her back. At the tip of the arrow stood a well of cut stone, and a tin cup hung from it on a chain, with a name scratched inside: Pike. Her figures matched his to the last decimal. Wherever the arrow pointed, the water had been waiting for someone patient enough to write it down.
