Geometric thunderbird and arrow on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A geometric bird with outstretched wings and a stylised central motif sits above a downward-pointing arrow. The linework is fine and precise, with light stippled shading across the wings and body. The design is in black and grey on pale skin, with a bra strap visible across the top of the frame.

The thunderbird came off the museum ledger the way a bad tooth comes out, slowly and with a lot of swearing under the breath. Mr Halvorsen wanted every feather squared to a true angle, so I sat at the long table under the north window with my compass and a tin of hard pencils and spent a week persuading a carved bird to lie flat on paper.

Each morning the carver's photographs lay pinned beside my board, creased where somebody had folded them to fit in a satchel. The wings ran out wide and level, and the old man who made the original had cut a small arrow through the talons, point down, as if the bird were fixing something to the earth. Halvorsen called the arrow superstition. I said it was the only honest part of the panel, because it was the only part that aimed.

By Friday I had the wings on graph paper, a hundred tiny dots for the shading, and a feeling I could not put in a report. The bird was no longer carved. It had become a set of decisions, each one mine, each one ready to be inked and sent to a printer in Tacoma.

On Saturday I carried the drawing down to the harbour myself. The arrow still pointed at the planks, and I thought, not for the first time, that a line only goes where you tell it to. I left the sheet on Halvorsen's bench and took the ferry home with my fingers grey to the knuckle.
