Geometric circle tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the inner forearm near the elbow and combines a large circle of overlapping rings with ornamental panels, arches and small motifs. Fine black linework is used for the outlines and details, with dotwork shading that gives the central circle a soft grey tone. Thin vertical lines extend up the arm above the main design, which is set against a dark green curtain and a patterned top.

The orrery came to Mrs Pell's back room in a tea chest, wrapped in a blanket that smelled of coal smoke and wet dog. Inside, under a brass arm bent like a broken wing, was a sphere of rings no bigger than a grapefruit, each one scored with fine lines that ran off into nothing. Her nephew Col had dragged it out of a house clearance in Hebden Bridge and wanted it gone by Friday. She said she would look at it, which was what she said to everyone.

For a week she worked the escapement with a jeweller's loupe and a stick of boxwood, and every night the vertical wires on the stand seemed longer than they had been at teatime. On the Thursday she found the maker's mark, a small arch under a crown, and a pencilled date from the year her own grandfather was born. Beneath the outer ring, on a little brass panel, someone had engraved a sentence in a hand that leaned forward as if in a hurry: the circle keeps its own time, and the lines keep the rest.

She fitted the last ring at a quarter past three in the morning. The central disc, a lattice of overlapping circles, began to turn very slowly against the lamp, and the shadows it threw across the green velvet of her curtains moved in step with it. Col rang at eight to ask whether it was ready. Mrs Pell told him it had been ready for eighty years, and that she was keeping it, and that he could have the tea chest back if he wanted something to put his boots in.
