Lotus mandala on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed lotus flower with layered, ornamental petals sits on the inner forearm, drawn in black linework with grey shading. A column of small dots runs down from the base of the flower, and the design is framed by the wrist and hand at the lower edge. The photograph is taken in daylight against a grey denim background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the last week of August the Pearmain trees have let go of most of their weight, and you spend the mornings on your knees under the old Bramley rows with a bucket that never gets heavy enough. Hal says the wasps know more about the crop than his ledger does, so you stop counting and start looking for the fruit with a dark pinprick where something has already got to it first.

At dinnertime in the packing shed you draw on the concrete with a stub of chalk, because Priya, the student from the village who is helping this week, asks how you decide which windfalls are worth keeping. You start with a ring of petals, then another ring inside it, the way the lotus opens over the pond at the bottom of the field. The petals tighten and shrink until the flower is more a knot than a bloom. Below the centre you put a dot, then another, then another, a column running down the floor toward the drain.

"Those are the trees we lost," Hal says from the doorway, not looking up from his tea. The frost in April took one row after another, and his father marked each lost tree in the margin of the ledger with a dot, so the book still shows where the cold walked through. You had assumed the petals were decoration. He nods at the chalk. "Only the ones that come back get the petals."

After the heat breaks you walk the line of dots out to the gate, counting under your breath, and at the last one a windfall lies in the long grass, still whole, its skin bruised gold on one side. It is heavier than it looks. You carry it back up the field in both hands and set it in the middle of the chalk flower, where the petals meet, and the drain takes the dust away before morning.
