Geometric circles and triangle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows overlapping circles, a small triangle with a dotted inner circle, and thin straight lines and arrows that cross the design. Inside the largest circle, a shaded wave pattern is built from fine parallel lines, while the rest of the work uses delicate single lines and stippled dots. The design is in black ink only and is photographed diagonally across a pale forearm against a dark background.

You drive the last peg at the edge of Harrow Wood as the light goes, and the brass of the theodolite is cold enough to sting your fingers. Mrs Tully at the lodge told you not to take the chain past the stile, and you told her the chain does not care what she thinks. The parish survey has three circles drawn on it in faded ink, one inside the other, and a small triangle at the foot with a dot in its belly where the boundary stone should be.

By morning the chain is lying in the bracken in a perfect ring, links touching, as though someone laid it out to take a measurement of their own. You kneel and follow the line with your finger. Every arrow in your notebook points at the same hollow among the birches, and the compass needle will not settle there. It swings in slow arcs, like a tide reaching up a sandbank and drawing back again.
Then you hear water, though the nearest stream is a mile off and has been dry since August. You dig where the arcs cross, and at the depth of one arm the spade rings on slate. Beneath it lies a bowl of still grey water, wider than the largest circle on your map, and on its surface your own lines are reflected back, bent and exact. You write the coordinates down. You do not write the other thing, which is that the water is rising slowly to meet the chain, and that you have begun, without meaning to, to lean towards it.
