A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass compass had been Ada's mother's, and it still pointed wherever it liked, which was rarely north. She took it up to Harrowgate Moss on the third day of the survey, because the chain would not lie flat on the wet ground and the pegs kept leaning. She set the theodolite on the old footings of the chapel, the one with the tilted lintel, and sighted across three circles she had scratched into the turf with a hazel stick.

The first circle was the parish boundary. The second was the mill pond, drained two summers before, which had left a pale ring on the stones. The third she had not meant to draw at all. It was simply where the plumb line fell when she let it swing from the arrow-slit in the tower, and it kept coming back to the same spot, a hair's breadth off the others, no matter how often she reset the weight.

By dusk she had four pages covered: lines running out from the chapel like spokes from a wheel that had lost its rim, a small triangle of cairn stones at the edge of the moss, and at the centre a ball of hatched shading where the ground had been cut for a well nobody remembered digging. She wrote the bearings in pencil, then went over them in ink, the way her mother had taught her.

Walking down in the dark she counted her paces and got a different number from the one she had at dawn. She did not write it down. At first light she climbed back up, and the plumb line was still swinging, and the cairn stood a little nearer the ring than it had the day before.
