Geometric diamond motif down the spine
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a person seen from behind, with short hair and a thin chain necklace. A vertical geometric tattoo runs down the centre of the upper back, built from stacked diamonds, squares and small flower-like motifs ending in a single dot. The bold black linework is crisp and even, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the design.

The mason finished the floor of the lower cloister on Tuesday, and I have spent two days since trying to explain to Prior Edmund why the pattern must end in a single black stone where the plumb line falls. He wants it to close like the others, with a border of plain squares. I told him the border was never the point.

The design runs down the middle of the walk in stacked diamonds, each one a square turned on its corner. Inside every diamond sits a smaller square, and inside that a four-petalled flower cut from a single tile, so the eye keeps finding one shape inside another. Where two diamonds meet, the lines knot and loop like a cord pulled through a ring, and then the next diamond begins. Gilbert laid the first of them forty years ago, when his hands were steady, and he never once used a ruler he could not check against a string.
Last evening, while the bell was still ringing for vespers, Gilbert sat on the step with his bad knee out in front of him and told me the dot is where the cord was pegged. Every other stone is measured from the one before it. The dot is measured from nothing, only from the ground itself. He said a pattern with no fixed place to start is only a fence that goes on until someone is tired of it.
After compline I knelt by the last diamond and traced its edges with a wet thumb. The black stone was cool, but the single dot had been lying in the last of the west light all afternoon, and it was warm. I sat there longer than I should have, Brother Anselm, and I did not tell the prior. Pray for us, and send me word of the new roof timbers when they come up the valley.
Your brother in the stone, Cuthbert
