Geometric dotwork full sleeves on four arms

Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

Four shirtless men stand side by side against a black background, each with a full arm sleeve running from the shoulder to the wrist. The sleeves combine honeycomb-like hexagon panels, star motifs and bands of ornate lattice, separated by bold black outlines. The work is built from fine dots and stipple in black and grey, with the light skin showing through the pattern, and the even lighting and tight framing keep the arms as the focus.

The snow has come in sideways again, and Halvard is swearing at the theodolite as if it had personally wronged his mother. You hold the lamp steady and wait for the cloud to thin, because the instrument will not give a bearing until the sky does. Four of you have been roped together since Tuesday, one behind the other along the ridge above Greyhorn Col, and every hour the wind rearranges the line between you.

The survey sheet is the only dry thing you own, and you guard it inside your coat. Halvard wants the pass drawn as a field of hexagons, because the wind cannot get a grip on a cell and a cell can be walked in a day. Dagny wants bands, a lattice of dry stone walls that will shelter the mules and show where the drifts build. You want stars, small points where the bearings cross, because you were the one who found true north when the compass lied to all of you on the first night.

At dawn the cloud lifts clean off the valley, and there below you are the terraced fields and the bee skeps of the lower farms, exactly where the sheet says they should be. Then you look up at the ridge and see that the pass runs a hundred yards further east than anyone has drawn it. Nobody speaks. Halvard laughs once, short and rough, and hands you the pencil.

You tear the sheet along the crease, pin the corrected one to the hut wall with a nail that bends twice, and go out to the rope before anyone can say you were right. Behind you the last stars are still out, small and exact, marking the place you have finally agreed on.
