Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A male head in a slicked-back hairstyle with a collared check shirt and buttons below, shown in profile with one ear visible. The face is built from angular, faceted triangles in orange, red, brown and yellow, with thin teal lines crossing the design, while the hair and shirt use shaded black and grey. The design is centred on a plain skin background with a soft, even focus.

By the third week you have stopped apologising to the greenhouse. The panes on the north side were cut by a man who measured everything twice and trusted nothing that curved, so each sheet comes out as a wedge or a kite, and every one needs its own paper template. Mrs Adair pays you by the hour and sits on a kitchen chair at the end of the bed, watching you through the steam with her hands folded over a tartan rug.

She tells you her husband Gerald drew the garden before he drew anything else. Every bed was a triangle, and every path ran at an angle to the one beside it. He pinned a plumb line to the sundial and let it swing until the bob stopped, and that was where the roses went. He called it the only honest line in the county. You find the line still tied to the sundial's arm, teal nylon gone grey with weather, a brass bead threaded on it that slides when you touch it.

On the last afternoon you lift the final pane into the frame and the low sun comes through it, throwing a copy of the lattice across the potting bench. Mrs Adair asks you to take the chair, then changes her mind and stands. You bend to press the putty home, and when you look up she is watching the glass, not you, her face broken into orange and rust lozenges, one eye bright where the light finds it. She says he would have wanted it done properly. You tell her it is.
