Geometric tribal tattoo on a finger
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a dark surface with the index finger showing a black tattoo of stacked geometric bands, zigzags and a small arrow at the top. The linework is solid and fairly bold, with no shading or colour in the ink. The shallow focus softens the warm, cream-toned background, while a gold band ring, a silver ring and a woven bracelet with red and green floral detail sit in sharp view.

The reunion is held in the same hall where Mr Pardoe once made you stand on a chair for talking during assembly, and the lino still smells of the same floor polish. Someone has pinned the Year Eleven photograph beside the urn. You find Tessa Lowry by it, because she is the only one who kept her geometry book, and she holds it up as though it were a passport.

"Remember the treasure map?" she says. You do not, at first. Then the page turns and there it is: your handwriting in green gel pen, zigzag rivers, stacked bands for the cliffs behind the playing fields, and at the top a small arrow pointing north, toward the bike sheds where the three of you swore to bury a time capsule. You drew it on the back of a French vocab sheet the week the lake flooded the bottom field.
You go outside, past the minibus and the dented bins, to the place the arrow indicated. Tessa counts paces the way she did at twelve. The bike sheds are gone, replaced by a car park, but the hawthorn is still there, and at its root the ground gives under your heel like something remembered. You kneel and dig with a plastic spoon from the buffet, and after a while your fingers find a tin lid.
Inside is a folded note in your own hand: "Whoever finds this, the arrow means go further." Under it sits a ring pop and a single bus ticket to nowhere. Tessa laughs until she has to sit on the kerb. You realise the map was never directions to the tin; it was the three of you agreeing, at fourteen, that the way back would always be marked somewhere. Behind you the hall doors open and someone calls your name, the old one.
