Geometric fox and forget-me-not tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows a small geometric fox made from angular outlined facets, placed on an inner forearm, and a sprig of five-petalled forget-me-not style flowers on a wrist. A close-up of the fox shows the thin, even black linework and simple unshaded panels, with the fox outline standing out against pale skin. The images use a plain, uncluttered composition with the tattoos as the clear focus.

The fox was folded from a single sheet of Harrowgate paper, the kind the paper-makers of Lesser Tolling sold only to the court clerks, and Ilse kept it in the drawer of her writing desk for three winters before she understood it was not finished. Every crease had a reason. The angles ran from the nose to the tail the way a river runs to the sea, and when she held it up to the window the facets caught the light in separate planes, each one a different grey.

She took it to Master Corran, who had mended the palace clocks for forty years and trusted nothing that could not be measured. He turned it over twice with his thick fingers, then set it on the bench beside a brass escapement. "Someone wanted you to read it as a map," he said. "Look where the lines meet. Five of them, every time. Five petals. That is a survey marker on the old road to the salt flats."
They walked the road together in the thaw, the fox folded in her coat pocket, and at the fifth milestone they found a sprig of blue flowers pressed flat under a stone, their petals still holding a little colour. Beneath it, scratched into the post, was a single word in a child's hand: remember. Ilse laughed until she cried, then she unfolded the paper fox, smoothed it on the stone, and left it there for whoever came next to read.
