Celtic knot arrow on inner arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black arrow runs diagonally down the inner arm, with a looped Celtic knot forming the arrowhead and three small stacked triangles at the tail. The linework is fine and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin is shown in soft light with the arm raised, and the tattoo sits in the centre of the frame.

Dear Sulis, you will laugh at me, but the bronze worker at the forge below the Cambeck ford has tied a knot into the head of Corvan's arrow. Not a knot you could cut with a blade, he swore, but a loop that folds back on itself three times, like the river when it turns under the mill wheel. Corvan says it is a charm against wandering shots. I say it is a waste of good metal, and Father says nothing at all, which is how I know he paid for it.

The shaft is ash, straighter than anything I have ever planed, and I cut the fletching myself from three grey goose wings. Corvan wanted them set as three stacked triangles, tip above tip, so the feathers step down the shaft like the notches on a tally stick. I told him the wind would argue with that design. He told me the wind had never shot a hind through the heart, and he was right, which annoyed me more than the knot.
He loosed at dusk from the ridge above the bog meadow. The hind went down the slope like smoke, and the arrow went wide into the bracken and was gone. We searched until the light failed and the frogs began their racket. In the morning I walked the stream bed alone and found it standing upright in the mud, knot end caught on a root so that it could not sink. The feathers were dry. I pulled it free with both hands and it came out clean.
I have kept it in my quiver ever since. Come home before the frost and I will show you. The knot is still tight.
