Small heart on finger and bow on wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows a very small solid black heart tattoo on the side of a finger, shown beside a beaded silver ring. The right panel shows a tiny bow on the inner wrist, drawn with a light, dotted or broken outline rather than solid lines. Both pieces are in black ink on pale skin, with plain backgrounds and soft indoor lighting.

Mind the loose stone there, it has taken better walkers than you. Yes, sit. The wind up here does not care whose boots it lifts. So. My grandmother's cousin Ilse carried salt over the Vell Pass for forty winters, and every one of them she tied a length of blue ribbon to the cairn at the top, where the snow comes off the ridge sideways. Not for luck, she said. For the mules, so they could see the way when the white came down and the world had no edges.

The ribbon was not hers to tie at first. It belonged to a girl at Heskin who had sent a letter down the valley with it knotted round the paper, asking the carrier to deliver it to a man on the far side. The carrier drowned at the ford. The letter sat in Ilse's satchel for a winter, damp at the corners, and she read it every evening by the stove until she could say it without looking.
Here is the part they leave out in the towns. The man had died in the spring avalanche. Ilse knew this and did not tell the girl, because the girl wrote again, and again, and each time Ilse tied a fresh bow to the cairn and pressed a small black pebble into the snow beside it, scratched with a heart shape using a hot nail. She said the girl would know, one day, which bows were answers.
When Ilse finally came down, the cairn had a hundred knots on it, and the girl was waiting at the bottom of the path, turning a beaded silver ring round her finger. Ilse never told her what the pebbles meant. She only pointed up at the ridge, and the girl laughed, and that was the answer too.
