Japanese-style leg tattoos on calves
Japanese · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two lower legs are shown from the front, each covered in black and grey tattoos. The left leg has flowing swirl and cloud shapes, while the right leg has a larger figure surrounded by clouds and wave-like forms. The shading is bold and high contrast against the skin, and the warm wooden floor and orange trainers sit in the background.

The function room at the Crown smells of carpet cleaner and the same lukewarm lager it always did, and you're halfway through telling Dean Pollard that no, you still haven't been to Japan, when somebody says your name the way only Gemma Rourke ever could, like it's a dare. She holds out a photocopy in a plastic sleeve. It's the drawing from Mr Ashby's art room, the one he pinned above the sink until the flood took it down: a figure riding a cloud-wave, its face a skull with a comma for a mouth, the swirls around it curling as though they haven't yet decided whether to break.

You remember the bet. Whoever kept the drawing dry through the Year Eleven exam fortnight would get the key to the art block. You carried it in your rucksack through the week the rain came sideways across the bus shelter on Abbeydale Road, and you remember the ink bleeding at the edges, and you remember thinking, very clearly, that the figure had shifted its weight toward you.
Gemma says the council is knocking the art block down next month. Last Tuesday the caretaker found a cardboard box of lost property in the boiler room, and inside it, sealed in a freezer bag, was the original sheet. Dry. Unmarked. The waves fresh as the morning it was drawn. Except the figure now faces the door.
You take the sleeve from her and step outside. The car park puddles hold the sodium light like spilt mercury, and you catch yourself checking their reflections, half expecting the swirls to rise and spill over the kerb. Behind you, Dean laughs and asks who's getting the next round, and nobody notices the blue-black stain on your fingertips, still wet.
