Every winter the red fox came up the goat track to the monastery of St Oswin, and every winter Brother Edmund fed it the crusts from his bowl and pretended not to notice. The brothers said it was a messenger. The abbot said it was a thief who had taken a hen from the lower farm. Edmund said nothing, because the fox had started sitting where the blue dye vats steamed, and it watched him work the indigo into the lace the nuns sent up from the valley.

The lace was fine work, diamonds set inside diamonds, chevrons like the ridges of frozen fields. Edmund studied each pattern as the creature sat, and when the thaw came he began to stitch them into a cloth as wide as a man's arms outstretched. It took him until Lent. On the last night he laid the cloth over the wall of the cloister, and the fox came and stood on the stones and looked at it for a long time.
In the morning the cloth was gone. The brothers searched the orchard and the cellars. Only a single blue feather lay on the step of the chapter house, long as a hand, and beneath it, pressed into the frost, were the marks of a fox that had risen up and not come down.
Edmund kept the feather in his prayer book and never again dyed another thread. Some say the fox still sits on the wall when the valley snow is deep, its back patterned with the frozen fields, its wings folded neat and waiting for someone brave enough to ask where it has been.
