The cat has taken to sitting on the gatepost every morning, facing the lane like a customs officer who knows what's coming up it. Dad says she's only waiting for the milk lorry, but I've seen her turn her head towards the top field as if someone were walking across the frost. You'll laugh, but I've started leaving the back door open an inch so she can get in to the range when the wind comes off the moor.

The collar was Mum's doing. She stitched a little brass bell onto a strip of red ribbon the Christmas before she went, and the cat wore it for a week before she worked it loose under the hay bales. Nobody has the heart to put it back on her. Still, the fur at her throat has kept the shape of it, a neat pale band, and when the low sun comes across the yard her back catches the light like wet slate.
Last Tuesday I went out in the dark to bring the ewes in and she wasn't on the gatepost. She was up on the byre roof, and when I lifted the lamp she opened her wings, two long grey fans, and the frost rose off the yard in fine rays as though she were lifting the whole morning up by its edges. I stood there until my fingers went numb. Then she folded everything away and dropped down onto the straw as if she'd only been stretching.
I haven't told Dad. He'd only say it's the cold and ask me to check the water trough. Come at Easter and bring your good gloves. There's a spare bell in the biscuit tin on the dresser, and I want to see whether she'll let you fasten it on her. Love, Nell
