Black and grey geometric dotwork sleeve tattoo with honeycomb and mandala motifs covering a person's upper arm and forearm.

Geometric hexagon full arm sleeve

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full arm sleeve of black and grey tattoos shows a honeycomb of hexagons across the upper arm, fading into a central mandala-like motif on the forearm. Below it, repeated hexagon and star patterns run down to the wrist, built from fine dots and clean linework. The subject stands outdoors on a paved pavement with a bicycle in the background, and the head is out of frame.

Dear Tom,

The bees have gone quiet since the frost, and Mum says it's the same at every hive along the cutting. I walked down to the platform this morning with the tin of wax you asked for, the one from the old skep behind the goods shed. The night porter let me wait in the waiting room, where the floor is tiled in hexagons, black and cream, and I counted them while the milk train thundered through without stopping. Four hundred and eleven before the clock struck eight.

Mr Haddow, the stationmaster, says the company is pulling up the old tiling to lay something modern. He showed me the drawings. Under the grey lino there was a mandala set into the floor by the ticket hatch, a star made of dots no bigger than a pin's head, and beneath it a pattern of hexagons shrinking down towards the platform edge as if the whole place were being drawn into a single point. I stood on it for a long time. Nobody had told me it was there.

I took one tile home in my coat pocket. It is cold and heavier than I expected, and when I hold it to the window the dots catch the light like the eyes of a moth. I have put it on the sill beside your letter. When you come home at Christmas, bring your ruler and we will count the rest together, every cell, until the platform is empty and the last train has gone out.

Your loving sister, Nell
