The glass cracked in February, the week the fog came in thick enough to swallow the foghorn. Dad sent me up the iron spiral with a bucket of putty and a sour temper, and I found the bird already inside the lamp room, a hummingbird no bigger than my thumb, hovering between the brass ribs of the old lens as if it had blown across the Atlantic from somewhere warm and lost its nerve on the way. Dad said they'd come over on the storms, riding the wind like thistle down. The gulls would have had it by dinner, he said, if the gulls had been quick enough.

I left a jam jar of sugar water on the sill and went back to work, but the bird kept threading itself through the prisms, flicking from one triangle of glass to the next. The lens was built to take a single flame and bend it into one clean beam, every edge measured to the inch. The bird ignored all of that. It fed, it rested in the shadow of the frame, and when the wind shifted it lifted off in a blur of grey and went straight at the cracked pane as though it could see a way through that I couldn't.

On the third night the fog lifted. I climbed up with the lamp turned low and found the bird gone, the jar empty, the hatch open to a sky full of stars. A single feather lay caught on the wire of the frame, dusky and fine as ash. I held it up to the light and the beam swept past, throwing the shadow of the brass and glass out across the black water in a long, precise outline, and for one turn of the lamp it looked exactly like a bird in flight.
